C.I.EAU aims to become the benchmark for popular education about water.

Our history

The Centre d’interprétation de l’eau de Laval was founded to inform citizens, especially children, about drinking water and wastewater treatment procedures.

The founding members of C.I.EAU wanted to raise awareness among people of all ages of the importance of taking care of water. The current team continues this work by promoting edutainment experiences that highlight the richness of the resource WATER.

C.I.EAU was born in 2002, thanks to the dedication of André Perrault. The idea was born before he retired as Director of Public Works and Environment for Ville de Laval. He brought together volunteers who shared his interest in water conservation and enhancement, while collecting the objects that would become part of the permanent exhibition, bearing witness to the urban water cycle.

In 2008, the dream came true with the inauguration of the permanent exhibition Le chemin de l’eau: de la rivière à la rivière on the second floor of the Sainte-Rose drinking water production plant. C.I.EAU then launched its activities aimed at the general public and young people. Its Lab’eau, imagined and designed by Denis Fyfe, an expert volunteer and accomplice of André Perrault, welcomes school groups, where an animator invites them to carry out scientific experiments on water.

With a very active and constantly evolving water community, C.I.EAU radiates across Quebec and beyond from the heart of Vieux Sainte-Rose in Laval.

The mission

C.I.EAU’s mission is to promote the protection and responsible use of water. This primary mission includes two secondary missions: to explain the technical aspects related to the production and distribution of drinking water, the responsible use of this precious resource, and the ecological disposal of urban wastewater. C.I.EAU’s secondary mission is to act as a collective memory of the historical evolution of water-related technologies, by preserving and disseminating artifacts that bear witness to this evolution.

To fulfill its mission, the C.I.EAU organizes a wide range of activities for the general public, including conferences, educational activities, events and more.

The C.I.EAU is guided in its decisions and actions by the following values:

  • Environmental responsibility
  • Innovation and continuous improvement
  • Social commitment
